The sublime Sandrine Bonnaire plays a research scientist whose volatile younger brother (Grégoire Colin) interrupts her laboratory routine one day with evidence that their father's accidental death years before was really a murder committed by his partner, who now lives in their country home and appears to have a relationship with their mother. The brother wants to avenge the crime, but is obviously too unstable, so, packing a pistol, Bonnaire hunts down the partner (Polish actor Jerzy Radziwilowicz) at his country estate, intending to assassinate him. Rivette's cunning update of the Electra myth initially seems like a straightforward, if formally rigorous, revenge story, but soon turns into a trademark spiral of conspiracy, unintended murder, and industrial intrigue. Phantoms from the past, cabals from the present, and horrors from the future weave a web entrapping the hapless Bonnaire, who comes to trust no one. Drawing on Lang and Hitchcock in its twisty tale, SECRET DÉFENSE “is an elegant, ascetic, and rigorous meta-thriller” (J. Hoberman, The Village Voice ).
