Bulle Ogier, a veteran of Rivette's cinema, is paired with her daughter Pascale in this beautiful, enigmatic film, which looks back to CÉLINE ET JULIE VONT EN BATEAU. Bulle plays a convict just released from prison who is shadowed through the streets of Paris by the leather-jacketed Pascale, who is either her angel-protector or her devious nemesis. For four days, the two women drift through the city's parks and monuments, playing an elaborate game of “Snakes and Ladders,” involving secret surveillance, duplicity, and, of course, paranoia. Pascale Ogier died two years after making this film, at the age of twenty-five. “Curiously powerful . . . wry, subtle, exasperating - and transcendent” ( The Village Voice ).
