“A full-fledged masterpiece” (David Sterritt), OUT 1: SPECTRE is to OUT 1: NOLI ME TANGERE what DIVERTIMENTO is to LA BELLE NOISEUSE: a shorter work carved from a much longer one, but so different in its orientation, design, and rhythm that it must be considered entirely separate. In Rivette's favourite setting - summertime Paris - two theatre groups rehearse Aeschylus while Jean-Pierre Léaud does his own kind of acting, pretending to be deaf-mute to increase the chance of handouts for his busking. Juliet Berto is a swindler who specializes in duping men out of money when she's not reading documents that might have to do with a conspiracy of “Thirteen,” a shadowy group to whom Bulle Ogier, a boutique owner, may or may not belong. Codes and conspiracy proliferate as these and many other characters meet, part, spy on, and elude each other. “Remains, for me, Rivette's finest achievement to date; it remains etched on the mind like a bad dream. . . . A mind-blowing experience, in fact, but one which, instead of 'taking one out of this world,' took one smack into it. Or into a world which one only dimly realizes was there - always right beneath the everyday world. . . . The cinema will never be the same again, and nor will I” (Richard Roud).
