An excellent introduction to the cinema of Jacques Rivette by his one-time assistant and admirer, Claire Denis, herself the subject of a retrospective at the Cinematheque in Fall 2000. Rivette is shown in his favourite milieu - the cafés, streets, and Métro stations of Paris - talking with the great film critic Serge Daney about the early days of the nouvelle vague , about art and ethics, their talk interspersed with clips from Rivette's films. Rivette proves that Denis' punning reference to him as “le veilleur” - the night watchman - is more than apt; there are few cinephiles more voracious. “Between the director and her two brilliant, loquacious subjects, there are three very fine minds on display in this film” (Film Society of Lincoln Center).
