Though one of Rivette's most acclaimed films, HISTOIRE DE MARIE ET JULIEN did not receive North American distribution. The film is a brooding ghost story - in some ways Rivette's UGETSU - in which Julien, a lonely clockmaker (Jerzy Radziwilowicz from SECRET DÉFENSE), rekindles an affair with Marie, a former lover (Emmanuelle Béart). Their relationship is complicated by Madame X, a vendor of Chinese antiquities (Anne Brochet) whom Julien blackmails with evidence that her merchandise is counterfeit and who holds a dark secret about Marie. Rivette rarely made a film of such romantic intimacy, a love story that plunges into realms of unfathomable mystery, and his two main actors give their naked all to it. “Another fabulously Rivettian dream-time. . . . infinitely ponderable and strange, not unlike CELINE AND JULIE GO BOATING” (Michael Atkinson, The Village Voice ).
