“Using a simple storytelling style that grows stronger with each passing scene, DRY SEASON draws the viewer into its small two-character drama set in post-war Chad, while it offers a deep reflection on injustice and frustrated revenge” (Deborah Young, Variety ). DRY SEASON's suspenseful and sophisticated tale of lives linked by a bloody, suppressed past wowed audiences at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. Set in Chad, one of the many African countries ravaged by civil war, DRY SEASON relates the story of a teenaged boy who seeks vengeance for the murder of his father, despite (or in defiance of) a recently declared amnesty. But the trail leads to a man whose actions and demeanour seem very far removed from those of a killer, and a grudging, volatile relationship unfolds between the two. An intelligent, slow-burning drama whose complex characters muddy the waters of moral retribution, DRY SEASON avoids any trite attempts at emotional manipulation, instead deriving its power from a bare-bones, believable script, simmering performances, and unflinching resolve to explore the human propensity for both violence and forgiveness.
