Sarah Polley's fiercely intelligent and nuanced work as an actor has made a significant contribution to the rise of cinema in English Canada. Her feature debut as director gives us something more: a tremendous, touching film showcasing two other phenomenal actors at their best. Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona (Julie Christie) have been married for decades. Now retired, they live comfortably in a house in the country, but their contentment is permanently disrupted when Fiona's memory starts to deteriorate. Determined not to saddle Grant with her declining health, she insists upon going to a rest home - which only tears Grant apart. Though plagued by the notion that Fiona may be tormenting him for past misdeeds, he forges ahead, resolved to ensure his wife's comfort even when it causes him anguish. Polley's assured, remarkable move into feature direction exquisitely captures the many subtleties of Alice Munro's work, from which the film is adapted. - Steve Gravestock
